Things That Excite Us: October 2017 Edition

Posted on October 13, 2017

Now that we’re officially in fall, there are a lot of things to get excited about. Here are a few we came up with.

New phone releases

As big Apple fans, of course we were super excited for the announcement of the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and especially the iPhone X. While the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus seem like pretty streamline upgrades from the iPhone 7, the iPhone X has some pretty unique capabilities. Some of the things that excite us the most are the facial recognition software, the animojis and wireless charging. There are of course competitors with other phones out there to try, like Google’s Pixel 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S8. The phone market might feel a bit oversaturated at times, but it helps keep companies on their toes and constantly innovating. What phone are you going to try next?

Fall weather

Fall brings cooler weather and we are all about it. Even though Richmond has decided to be in denial about it being fall and it seems to want to stay hot, our hearts crave true fall weather. We’re talking cool and crisp days where we can wear warm sweaters, light jackets and scarves. Lots and lots of scarves. Proper fall weather also brings cravings for classic fall foods like the PSL, pumpkin pie and apple everything. Also, taking walks around our office is much easier when we won’t be sweating buckets anymore!

Fall TV is back

Some of our favorite shows that took summer hiatuses are finally back, as are some new shows! One returning show that’s getting a lot of buzz is This is Us. And after Sterling K. Brown just won an Emmy for his role on the show, it’s no surprise people are excited to watch season 2 (and probably cry for hours after each episode). If you’re into historical fiction then you’ll be excited than Outlander is back, and if you like drama you’ll be excited Scandal has returned (although it’s the final season). American Horror Story is back too with Cult, so if you’re into the horror genre and love the show get ready for some election-themed horror. And don’t forget one of our favorite Netflix shows, Stranger Things, will return in a few weeks. And right on time for Halloween too.

New shows that are getting a lot of buzz include Will & Grace (guess it’s not technically new) and Young Sheldon (which is kind of new but still a spinoff of Big Bang Theory). There’s also the Ken Burns documentary, The Vietnam War, that’s a 10 part and 18 hour epic series that’s all-encompassing, very well done and extremely memorable. Overall, there’s a lot of good TV and we’re all about it.

Bring on the Oscar prep

Now is the time for all the serious movies that want consideration for academy awards to start coming out/start getting buzz. We do an Oscars office bracket every year, and now is really when the prep work starts. Some obvious choices to look out for are Battle of the Sexes (for the performances of Steve Carell and Emma Stone), Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan for directing), and Darkest Hour (performance by Gary Oldman). Some other movies that came out earlier this year might be worth rewatching, as they have some potential Oscar buzz around them. Get Out, a sleeper hit earlier in the year, could get nominated for best director for Jordan Peele. The Beguiled was another release earlier in the year that could bring some star power for performances by Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst. A long shot, but would still be fun to root for, is Wonder Woman for directing, giving Patty Jenkins some credit for a woman-led superhero movie. The Big Sick, a comedy, could also get some traction this year for best screenplay, which would be a nice change of pace.

New music

This time of year brings a lot of new music from tons of different artists and we’re pretty excited to hear it all. There have already been some recent releases that were making headlines. Kesha finally released an album after years without new music, and it’s a mix of the old Kesha we all love to dance to and some more toned down stuff we weren’t expecting. Miley Cyrus also has new music that clearly shows she evolves with each album she puts out. A very different vibe from her last album, but still very “Miley”. Shania Twain also released a new album recently. Her last album came out over ten years ago, so this is pretty big news for those who grew up on her music. Others who have recently released albums include Demi Lovato, Macklemore and Foo Fighters.

There are also exciting new releases that we have to look forward to as well. After giving a moving speech at the MTV VMA’s we were so excited to see Pink come back into the spotlight. And now we have a new album and tour from her to get excited about too. The ever controversial Taylor Swift has her sixth album coming out this year too and we’re curious to hear how much the last year and a half has influenced her music. Knowing how she usually works, we’re sure we’ll get a lot of subtle, and sometimes outright, references or influences from all her recent drama. We’re also getting a joint album from country royalty Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. They’ve had successful careers separately, been married over 20 years, and now they’re making and releasing music together. Country fans get excited! Other albums to look out for soon are Kelly Clarkson, Evanescence (now that’s a throwback) and Sam Smith.
