Social Media News – Week of 10/13

Posted on October 15, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 4.10.17 PMThings are constantly shifting and changing in the world of social media. This week is no different. In this post, we’re taking a look at the most recent changes to your favorite platforms and how this will affect your digital marketing strategy.

Facebook

1

Facebook has been looking into rolling out an anonymous chat app for some time now, but it’s beginning to look like this will be available sooner than anticipated. How will this affect your digital marketing plan? It’s too soon to tell, but it’s more than likely messing up the plans for similar apps such as Secret, Whisper, and Yik Yak.

Like-gating will officially be banned on November 5th. What does this mean, exactly? Prior to this, a business could offer incentives (such as discounts or giveaways) if a user liked its page. This practice will no longer be allowed. This will likely throw off many contest marketers or game developers, though other incentives aside for a page like will still be available.

3

Want to comment on someone’s status but just don’t know what to say? Never fear, the stickers are here! Facebook is now allowing users to comment on statuses with stickers. This can be great for businesses who are looking to respond to comments on their page with more than just a like or generic “thank you” response.

Instagram

1

Captions are in! Embedded photos now include captions in the post. Also, the images will now be resized for the screen you are viewing it on. This will provide for a richer storytelling experience and an easier integration of Instagram on different sites.

2

Instagram is officially more popular among teenagers than Facebook. This doesn’t affect Facebook too much since they took the plunge and bought Instagram in 2012 but it does affect content marketers. If you aren’t on Instagram already, your business needs to look into it if you’re marketing to millennials.

Snapchat

Speaking of millennials, Snapchat is one of the most popular apps used among them today. This untapped market is the perfect opportunity to reach users, and Snapchat has finally recognized that. They will begin rolling out ads for the platform soon.

LinkedIn

Slideshare, a slide hosting service owned by LinkedIn is introducing a mobile app for iOS. The app has been available for Android devices for a while now, so the introduction of the app on iOS is a welcome change. This is a great way to share presentations and learn more about a topic you’re interested in.

Ello

You’ve probably heard about it. What is it exactly? It aims to be a new social media platform that is entirely ad-free. Digital marketers, take note: this is a platform that doesn’t want your business. While it may be fun to try out personally, avoid setting up a page for your business; that would be a bad move on this platform.
