The World of Web Fonts

Posted on March 10, 2014

A few years ago, the only way to have unique fonts on your website, was to embed typographical imagery onto the pages. As SEO/SEM become more and more pivotal, web designers and developers began turning to Google Fonts (and other web-font resources) instead of adding decorative text as images. Having text on your website is much better than images, if you really want to get noticed via SEO, and Google fonts look better too!

Advantages

The pros of using Google fonts might not be obvious, but they’re definitely worth noting. The advantages of using Google fonts might not be so obvious to those who aren’t technologically savvy, so here’s a quick list:

  • Google fonts are free and very easy to use. Embed them directly in your website’s code, or download to your desktop.
  • The fonts are hosted by google, which means they load quickly and reliably.
  • They work with all tablet and mobile devices. (No Flash!)
  • Google enables you to preview fonts in different styles (bold, italic, etc.) before embedding or downloading.
  • There is no limit to the number of fonts you have access to. Use as many or as little as you’d like.

Disadvantages

The list of cons is much shorter. In fact, there is really only one: There are currently just over 400 fonts in Google’s library. The number of non-Google fonts clearly outweighs the number of fonts Google offers, but most folks can usually find what they’re looking for in that library of 400 fonts.  As you can see, the pros clearly outweigh the cons.
