Your Marketing is Your Company’s “12th Man”

Posted on January 30, 2014 by Jeff Pollard

Marketing is your 12th ManWith Super Bowl XLVIII coming up this weekend between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, I have a slightly different way to think about your company’s marketing. If you’re not a football fan, you may be wondering, “What the heck is a ’12th Man?'”.

In professional football, each team is allowed to have 11 players on the field at a time. However, the concept of a team’s “12th Man” is thought to have been created in the early 1900s – when football was still a very new sport. The “12th Man” refers to the team’s loyal, spirited fans in the stadium. These rowdy fans – especially in the case of the Seattle Seahawks (to a tune of around 130+ decibels!) – can have a significant impact on the game by using crowd noise to disrupt the concentration and play-making ability of their opponent. As you might guess, this “12th Man” gives the home team a significant competitive advantage in the game.

Gain An Advantage Over Your Competition

It’s important to think of your company’s marketing as your “12th Man”. Whether you’re a small, medium, or large company, your marketing can give your business a significant advantage over your competition. Really great marketing can definitely disrupt your competitors – and even your entire industry.
